The FY 2027 H-1B cap registration period opened on March 4, 2026, and closed on March 19, 2026. USCIS conducted its initial round of selections and many employers are now in the next phase of preparing and filing H-1B cap petitions for selected beneficiaries.

While the registration window has passed, this remains an important stage of the H-1B season for both employers and foreign national employees.

Where the Process Stands Now

With selections issued, employers with selected candidates may now move forward with filing H-1B cap-subject petitions between April 1st, 2026 and June 30, 2026.  Only beneficiaries with selected registrations may proceed to petition filing.

For employers that were not selected, it is important to monitor USCIS updates in case additional selection rounds are announced later this year.

Major Change This Year: Weighted Selection Process

The FY 2027 H-1B cap lottery introduced a significant shift in how H-1B registrations were selected.

Instead of relying solely on a random lottery, USCIS implemented a weighted selection process that gave greater preference to higher-paid beneficiaries.

According to DHS, the goal of the new system is to better protect wages, working conditions, and job opportunities for U.S. workers while encouraging competitive compensation practices.

This change may continue to influence how employers approach future H-1B filings and workforce planning.

What Employers Should Focus on Now

For selected cases, employers should prioritize:

  • Preparing complete and accurate H-1B petitions
  • Reviewing wage level and job classification details
  • Gathering required supporting documents
  • Meeting USCIS filing deadlines
  • Planning onboarding timelines carefully

For unselected cases, alternative visa strategies or future filing options may be worth reviewing.

Key Takeaway

Although the registration period has ended, the FY 2027 H-1B season is still actively moving forward. Employers should focus on timely petition preparation, compliance, and long-term workforce strategy under the new weighted selection framework.
